Before you start
Carry the driving licence accepted for your booking, passport or ID, rental agreement and the vehicle documents supplied at handover. Check that every named driver is included. Rules and enforcement can change, so use current road signs and official notices as the final authority.
Speed, lights and restraint
Read the posted limit rather than relying on a generic country table. Limits can change near settlements, tunnels and roadworks. Use seat belts in every seat, secure children in the agreed restraint and switch on the required vehicle lighting. Never combine driving with alcohol or phone use.
Mountain and coastal roads
Keep a margin on narrow bends, avoid cutting corners and allow faster local traffic to pass only where safe. Summer queues around Budva and Kotor and winter conditions toward Žabljak require more time than the distance suggests.
Parking and your rental
Use marked parking, retain tickets and check whether an accommodation address is inside a pedestrian zone. Review the rental FAQ, choose a suitable Montenegro rental car and confirm your pickup location before travel.
