Permission comes before route planning
A rental car must not be taken abroad merely because the border is open to the traveller. Declare every intended country before booking and obtain written confirmation for the exact vehicle and dates.
Documents and insurance
Ask which original vehicle documents, authorisation and insurance evidence will be supplied. Border authorities and insurers determine what is accepted; a verbal assumption is not enough.
Fees, ferries and one-way return
A cross-border permission fee, territorial restriction or ferry rule may apply. Driving abroad does not automatically permit returning the car abroad; see the one-way rental guide.
Build a time margin
Queues can vary by checkpoint, season and time of day. Never schedule a vehicle return or flight immediately after an estimated border crossing. Check the rental conditions and ask before payment.
